Yellowstone National Park Holiday Cards

YNP Holiday Card

Yellowstone National Park honored Intrinsik by selecting a sketch by Dan Harding for their annual Holiday Card. The simple elegant line drawing was produced during the Old Faithful Planning Charette and illustates a profile of the Old Faithful Geyser and Inn. Here is a detailed narrative by Dan:

“About the card and the sketch: I am sharing with you a special Holiday card, as this is the official card from Yellowstone National Park. In September, Intrinsik was invited to attend a weeklong design charrette at Old Faithful Inn/Lodge and the Great Geyser Basin in Yellowstone.  It was a fantastic opportunity as Intrinsik was there with four other architecture, planning and landscape firms of distinction from across the country to explore new ideas for rechoreographing the “Old Faithful” experience. This included looking at short and long term master planning issues, automobile traffic and people patterns as well as new and existing architectural solutions. It was the objective of the charrette to come up with suggestions on how a visitor’s experience of one of our nation’s most unique natural treasures could not only be enhanced but preserved so that many more will have the opportunity to enjoy it for years and years to come.  After a week of long hours and hard work we were given the opportunity to present our ideas. As our team spokesman and storyteller, I started our presentation with this very simple sketch that I had done on the first day of the charrette.  At the time, it was a way to begin our work on how simple we wanted our idea to be - to preserve and take care of what is already there because there is nothing that we could possibly suggest that is more powerful than Old Faithful Geyser and the majestic historical Old Faithful Inn by architect Robert Reamer.

As we worked through the week, our ideas found resolve, were well-detailed and in the end became the sensitive response to this great place we were all striving for.  The presentation seemed to be almost perfect and the by the kind response to the story we told, it certainly suggested that our points were well made.  In the crowd of many at the final presentation was the superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, Susan Lewis.  Susan became incredibly moved by the work, the ideas and the simple story behind this little sketch. Having done many sketches and drawings over my years, it was a pleasure for her to find such merit in something so basic. Thus when National Park asked if it could be used for the 2009 Holiday Card, it was a true honor.  I hope you enjoy the card and the sketch, Yellowstone Park is a wonderful place and with out question Old Faithful seems to be its heart. I can only hope that if you have yet to experience our Nations First National Park that perhaps 2010 is year! ”
